I'm wondering what the best way is to totally and utterly kill Compiz Fusion from a terminal. I have a simple script for games that I use in launchers that stops Compiz, runs the game, and finally runs Compiz again.

Using the usual "metacity --replace" works, except that it leaves a bunch of dead compiz.real processes. Each one consumes about 25-30MB of memory... and never gives it back. The more times I launch a game or simply use "metacity --replace", the more compiz.real processes appear and the more memory I lose.

So, is there a clean way to totally stop Compiz. killall hasn't worked very well either for some reason. Thanks!
