install problems - drops to console, no GUI

Just d/l'ed the 8.04.1 ISO (desktop) and I get the chooser screen just fine, but I cannot do much with it beyond that. Seems like any option I select (live CD or install, etc.) just ends up dropping me down to a BusyBox shell with no GUI and a blank (initramfs) prompt looking back at me. I take it from reading the docs that I should be presented with a GUI for installation.

    Code:
    BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
    (initramfs) _
Knoppmyth R5.5 installs and runs great on the machine, but I wanted to check out the competition

I found this archived thread and the all_generic_ide boot fix didn't help.

    Hardware details:
    A7N8X-E Deluxe (BIOS 1013 I believe)
    Athlon XP 3200+
Older WD HD (80 gig EIDE)
    Geforce 6200
    2x1 gig DDR2-400
    Onboard sound and LAN
