Question Is VLC the best multimedia player for Ubuntu?

I have used VLC on Windows and Mac and have always thought that it was the best media player out there.

I was wondering if this is the same for Ubuntu or if there was a better option

    Thanks in advance,

VLC is pretty good but I also use MPlayer. Not really sure which is better.

For videos/DVDs, yes, I prefer VLC over others.

I use vlc on both Ubuntu and XP. I don't know if it's the best, but I've never needed anything better.

Talking Re: Is VLC the best multimedia player for Ubuntu?

This one time, I tried to open a RealPlayer video with RealPlayer (vomits uncontrollably) and it wouldn't play. I tried opening it with MPlayer, and it was terribly out of sync, but it played!

I'm certainly no expert but I use VLC almost exclusively. No spinning dials or flashing lights - it just works. Which is nice.

Re: Is VLC the best multimedia player for Ubuntu?

I love VLC and I've been using it for years, but I might dump it when 0.9.0 comes out because I don't like Qt programs. I've just noticed that the most recent version available for Ubuntu is 0.8.6e, even thought the official latest version is 0.8.6i...what's up with that?

Ubuntu is not a rolling distribution and packages versions are frozen in the repo. Read why here
