    dimension 4100

I have the ubuntu 7.10 disk from canonical.com and would like to install it in my Dell dimension 4100 and dump windows for good. I am familiar with fedora but I am concerned about hardware compatabilty etc. Could anyone guide me as to what problems I will encounter. It originally came with windows me which was awfull. I did a clean install of xp home but I'm not sure if the bios got upgraded. Thankyou very much for your time! I am a carpenter so need instruction!

Well you need to install ubuntu on last drive which must be left unallocated and a swap space if u need to have both XP and ubuntu on your laptop... Its better if u install latest ubuntu 8.04 to fix any hardware issues...

I have no interest in dual booting. My computer is down and I just need to use it. Is there a link to some directions I can follow? Thanks!

    Re: dimension 4100

I've ran Ubuntu (6.06 or 6.10) on several 4100's in the past without an issue. Only issue I could see is if you installed some recent hardware in it - the 4100 is old enough that the stuff that came with it is well supported.

    Re: dimension 4100

Thanks for answering! Am I to understand that unlike windows I will not have to download a bunch of drivers but the ubuntu disk has generic drivers that will run everything? Also-If I had trouble would I be able to boot from cd again and reinstall windows or am I burning a bridge here? I have autocad and don't know if there is a good open source program yet. Peace
