I think you should be fine with 8.04. It never hurts though to just pop in the liveCD. If your card gets detected properly and you get drivers installed no problem go ahead with the install. I dont have much experience with ubuntu and AMD/ATI so I am not positive what the state of the drivers are (I know they are getting much better but im not sure how far along they are). But what I can tell you is that the specs are high enough to run compiz and whatever else with no problems.

Stay with the older release if it works. Why change if noting is wrong. 7.10 has security patches for 18 months from its relase date (covered until April 2009). 7.10 has most of the same stuff

You may as well give 8.04 a try. It's supported until 2011 too (if you don't want to upgrade).

Personally I much prefer it over 7.10

    you definitely should.

One of the nice things about 8.04 is that it is an LTS release( Long term support). This means that they will keep updating it for 3 years on the desktop and 5 on the server. Therefore you can keep it for a long time without being forced to upgrade. 7.10 however is not LTS and only has 1.5 years of updates. Currently it has less than 1 year left.

Actauly you do and don't even know it. Secuirty fixes includes things like patches to the kernel and to even programs like Firefox. These patches fix hole in the programming that could casue a malicious hacker to steal your personal info.
