How do I make and use my own desktop icons?
hello ,
this is how .
Right click on desktop > create launcher >
launcher
now on the command bit , type the command as if from terminal.
eg. to make a firefox icon it would be command " firefox "
now the icon
click on the little spring to the left of he window ( where the launcher field is ). Then you need to find the image of the program. You can search for this in the files , however im lazy i just Google the name of the program under images and save the image to the launcher.

Do icons have to be svg images, or can i make a jpg, etc. on gimp and use that image?
For those new to Ubuntu most of your answers can be found at help.ubuntu.com or ubuntuguide.org
I am wondering the same thing. And if I can't use jpgs, how would I got about making an svg icon. I am very much interested in designing icons and such, but don't know where to start.
If you interested in making .svg's try inkscape

remember kiddies: sudo rm -rf= BAD!, if someone tells you to do this, please ignore them unless YOU WANT YOUR SYSTEM WIPED
Very cool. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.
Save the image to the launcher... that's the part I'm having trouble with. Making an svg image with inkscape, no problem. But I can't "drag and drop" the image from my desktop to the launcher. Nor can I just save it to /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places/ , I am denied permission.
In the launcher creation thingy, there's a generic icon at the top left. Click on it and navigate to your icon you made. Place the icon in a spot where it won't get lost, first though.
Look at this image, and follow the steps, 1,2,3. (only never use that command it shows ever for anything whatsoever)
Did that help?
Oh, and you can use .png files for icons.
