Exclamation Nvidia 8500 Gt resolution problem

Hello, I am completely new to linux and I have just installed ubuntu 8.04. Right after the installation i loged in and everything was fine until it notified me about some new updates for my nvidia 8500GT 3d and 2d acceleration support drivers or something like that, and so I installed it and after the restart my screen resolution can't got higher than 800x600. I tried to download the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com but didn't quite get the installation process and I even found some other threads on this forum with a similar problem to mine but none of the solutions given in those threats has helped me to solve my problem. Please help me and thanks in advance.
Also, how can I disable that popup login prompt thing each time i am trying to execute a program that i write and in some other cases too?

    Thanks in advance - loxaXcracker
