can i use cd image for installating ubuntu ?

i am looking for a way to install a different version of ubuntu in my system. currently i have some problem in my cd writer, can i use the cd image for install ?
i googled, but got positive results only for alternate-install cd, and not a normal live cd.

    Try using unetbootin
Or if you are using dapper or gusty you can upgrade online to hardy. See here

i am actually having hardy on my system..its just that i want to dual boot with intrepid (just for fun), i am having its cd image, but as i said i dont have a working cd writer.
i think unetbootin is gotta work..but still i would like to know some manual way of doing it.

Or use something like virtualbox to run it as it is still in development and you probably will have breakages.
