Unhappy hardy turns laptop into clicking space heater

Hardy was really abusive on the hard drive and the processor fan never turned off. the laptop became EXTREMELY HOT. I was not running any processes (this starts right after boot), this thing is pretty much brand new and I clean it regularly, so save the bottom-level-tech-support suggestions, please. I was excited to upgrade to Hardy and ended up having to format and go back to Gutsy. My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6000.

I guess what I'd like to know is do the devs know about this problem, and are they working on it?

Have you filed a bug at launchpad? Devs don't frequent the forums much.
Good site to search for guides & how-tos.

There is a bug in the BIOS in a majority of DV6000 and DV9000 series of HP's that cause the machines to run very, very hot (in some cases even casing melts/deforms). There is a BIOS update avalible to fix this particular issue (if you already haven't). I would advise you to first install that one. Thereafter, if the heat issue remain, we can diagnose any linux issues that might be present.

HP does have a bios upgrade for your model on their site. The catch? You need to have windows to run the upgrade. I tried it in WINE and it didn't work. So... I recommend a small windows partition to fix HP laptops.

I have a recovery disk on order... so I can re-install windows... then reinstall UBUNTU.

Do you guys have a slow boot when only the battery supplies power? I think that may be part of the same issue.

    Lesson? Do not buy HP.
