when booted, goes to black screen

i just installed ubuntu on the same drive as windows xp and when i start up ubuntu, a few lines of text appear and then it goes to a black screen. its hard to see what the text says but the last line is something about exiting. ive waited at the black screen for a minute or two and still nothing happens. is there any way to fix this?

When you boot Ubuntu in Recovery Mode, do you see any errors during the boot process? Also, try doing xfix and see if that makes an improvement.
