I just completely removed support for the paper clip and the little dog on the search page from my windows CD (via nlite). I've noticed that configuring windows before it even installs actually makes it usable!

...you almost die having to listening to your COMPUTER teacher tell you he doesn't bother with anti-virus software and only reinstalls when the system is too slow.

So he continually reinstalls his system. Where's the problem? I presume he has access to another one which he actually uses.

    On topic:
Some people like to tinker with autos, tune their engines.
You like to tinker with software, tune the source.

Some people boast when they make a nice part for their custom modification roadsters.
You boast when you write a nice patch for Xorg.

And to boast: I just finished adding software-side "emulation" of two-finger scroll (like on macbooks) to the synaptics touchpad driver. My hardware doesn't support this, but I added a clever trick to the driver.
When I innocently started using Linux, I didn't think that in 2 years I will be diving in the source of a xorg module. But, damn, it feels good!

No, although everyone around me claims that I am well above average.
I hope they are wrong, because if I am above average this world is in trouble.

    4) You have no-one to talk to about computers/Linux/BSD/Windows etc..
That seems more a matter of chance and social skills. Or IT classes at the community college.

Re: You know you're a geek when........

One geeky joke. I think it was from XKCD or something:

    Joe and Barry talk:
Joe: So Barry, how did the date with Sarah go?
Barry: [...] then we went home to watch a movie. So I fire up mplayer on my linux box. Unfortunately xscreensaver locked the screen every 15 minutes.
Joe: Oh, damn, what did you do?
Barry: I wrote a small python script to jiggle the mouse cursors every 5 minutes.
Joe: See, Barry, Linux may have its problems, but it also gives you the tools to fix them.
    Barry: Indeed.
Joe: And how did the rest of the night go?
Barry: Well, half an hour into the mouse scripting manual Sarah got bored and left...

People occasionally tell the same to me.
And I have the same worries afterwards!

It also is sometimes quite disturbing to think the amounts of below-average intelligent people... and what high-responsibility work they are doing. (I could think of few such people)

btw I recently read an anecdote that goes like

    B. Gates is fishing and catches magic golden fish.
So fish says "You've got one wish!"
Bill: "I want war to end in Iraq."
Fish: "Can't do that! Wish something else!"
Bill: "Then I want Windows to be without bugs."
Fish: "Err, where is this Iraq thing again?"

I hope to be enjoying it within a few weeks. Thank you!

What exactly does that mean, anyway?

If only more applications supported scrolling left and right...
