Using the Top Row of My Keyboard

The top row of any standard keyboard contains numbers from 0-9. I rarely use the number keys, always reaching for the number pad when I need to type a number somewhere. But I do use the special characters you get when you press the buttons in the top row in conjunction with SHIFT, especially the parens and the *.

Is there a way to map these buttons directly to the symbols instead of the numbers?

It sounds like that would make it difficult to use any other computer than your own, once you get used to it. With that said, I think xmodmap might be the right tool for this.
    Code:
    man xmodmap
    Good luck!
