simple app to test audio in/out??

I am messing with my audio settings was wondering if there is a simple app that monitors audio in? In windows there was a setup window that showed a meter to test the volume of the mic device. Is there anything similar that I can install on linux?

Try in searching the Add/Remove programs for sound/recording level monitor/metter. I'd search for you, but I have a localised (translated) version of Ubuntu, so most of these simple applications are translated...

You may find that the Recording Level Monitor is already installed, although it may not show in the Sound & Video menu.

Right-click on Applications, select Edit Menus, click on Sound & Video in the left pane, and check the Recording Level Monitor box. It should then appear in the menu.
