I only have a command line when starting up

I dont have the server edition either, i installed via wubi.
I tried startx, that isnt a command.

this happened once before, but it went away on its own. I dont really like being stuck on windows so if someone could help that would be awesome

    thanks

sounds like you may have inadvertantly installed the server edition though. does it allow you to log in at least?
    Debian Testing(64bit) + XFCE4 AM2 5200+ ATI Radeon HD4350, 4gig RAM,320Gig and 750gig HDs

what's the difference between an answer and a solution? An answer is what they want to hear, a solution is what they don't want to hear

If you say startx isn't a command then it sounds like you don't have any DE installed or even X itself.

weird, it started working again. like i said this happened before
I dont understand why this would happen. my battery was extremely low... but it was also plugged in.

does anyone have any leads as to why this would happen? i tried starting it like 4 times less than an hour ago to no avail. but this time it worked fine.

If it happens again, try typing some basic commands such as "ls /" to see whether you are in a proper shell.

I suspect that faulty hardware interrupted the start-up process.
