Any chance those machines had Zone Alarm on them? It's known (apparently) that the update along with Zone Alarm would cause the loss of connection.

Yeah, I got told that yesterday when I rang my ISP about connection issues. Apparently the support monkey hadn't been given a script for what to say if the customer tells you they're running Linux (as I did), because she just kept telling me to turn off Zone Alarm and that should fix the problem.
