The first thing to do when you get an installation error is to do this on the command line:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install -f
If that fails, I always get hacking:

    Code:
    cd /var/lib/dpkg/
    sudo mkdir info.backup
    mv -t ../info.backup info/bandwidthd*
    sudo dpkg --force-all --purge bandwidthd
    sudo apt-get install -f
That is an extremely heavy-handed way of removing the offending software from your system. You should then be able to continue with what you were doing.
