My graphics card, an ATI radeon 9500 has gone to graphicscardheaven
With this card 3d acceleeration and Compiz worked fine in Hardy.
I replaced this card with an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro agp. (RV630)
Now when using the restricted driver the screen goes black after startup and before the login.
When I use the command
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
the restricted driver is uninstalled and the xorg.conf looks like this:
Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

When Compiz turned on, the screen goes white and I have to rest by using ALT-F2 and metacity --replace.
I also reinstalled Hardy from scratch but that didn't help.
At http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ca..._86_linux.html this note looks promissing:
Note: AGP variants for the ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 and 2600 series of products is now supported with this release of the AMD Proprietary Linux driver.
How do I install this driver and do I risk to ruin my system?
