Unhappy Really need help with mounting usb sticks

    Hi all,
I'm unable to mount ANY sort of usb removeable drive. I have tried many memorysticks, a external hard drive, a hard drive video camera and a usb card reader.
When I try to mount in dolphin or in a terminal I get this message:

    Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda5,
    missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
I can mount these drives as root however, so it is not the computer.

I am using Kubuntu 7.10 on an Acer TravelMate C110, If you require any more information, please just ask...

    Luke

What do you mean by you can mount them as root? Are you trying to mount without using sudo?

Please try to mount the disk and then run the command:
    Code:
    dmesg
    and post the output here.

Yes, without sudo in terminal, and I presume not in dolphin either then...
Here you go dmesg as requested, thanks!

Very strange...it seems to be thinking that these USB devices are CDs. Which commands exactly are you using to try to mount them?

Well it worked before, but I right clicking and pressing mount in dolphin, or typing in a terminal
    Code:
    mount /dev/hdb1 /media/
Although hdb1 changes from drive to drive...
Im stumped.... like I said, It was working perfectly until like last night so I have no idea what would have caused this...

    you have to use
    Code:
    mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1
/media has folders for other drives that can only be overwritten as root. That is bad to overwrite them. Try that command and it should work.

Re: Really need help with mounting usb sticks

Ok, when I have been trying, I have mainly been using a GUI (dolphin) But I tried that command as me and sudo'ed, here are the results
    Code:
    luke@lukes-tablet:~$ mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1
mount: only root can do that
    luke@lukes-tablet:~$ sudo mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1
mount: mount point /media/hdb1 does not exist

    mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1
you may need to sudo the mkdir. Also, post your fdisk -l output when you insert usb drive.

Re: Really need help with mounting usb sticks

Making the directory didn't work I'm afraid,
    Code:
    sudo mount /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1
mount: special device /dev/hdb1 does not exist
And here is the results from fdisk -l when the stick was inserted...
    Code:
    luke@lukes-tablet:~$ fdisk -l

    Disk /dev/sdb: 1024 MB, 1024966656 bytes
    32 heads, 63 sectors/track, 993 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 2016 * 512 = 1032192 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x000d4574

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 1 992 999813+ b W95 FAT32
Thanks again for taking the time!

Re: Really need help with mounting usb sticks

    aha! try
    Code:
    mkdir /media/sdb1
    mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
Try mount without the sudo! No reason to mount removables as root. This should work. You had the device name wrong.
