I want to know which multimedia programs are the best. I have heard xmms for audio and either xine or vlc for video. Is this correct or are others better? Will any be released soon I should look for? Thanks

All about preference. I use Rhythmbox for music and xine for videos.
Instead of XMMS you may want to look at its GTK2 equivalent, Beep Media Player, and instead of xine you might prefer totem-xine which integrates xine as a backend to Totem. VLC and mplayer are good for video as well.
Previously known as 23meg
foobar2000 with wine for music is perfect.
I really dont like xine-ui...
For gnome, rythmbox. For KDE, amaroK,
For music: beep-media-player or rhythmbox
For video: vlc or mplayer (gtk version )

amarok roks!
(on gnome, too!)
Being a Gnome guy, I can't believe how long I went without realizing this. I usually hate KDE apps, but K3B and amaroK are way ahead of anything for Gnome. And they run fantastic natively.Originally Posted by phen
The best apps are definitely amaroK for music and totem-xine for video, IMO of course.
