Is there a current 'golden child' for Jabber servers?

I'm thinking of setting up a Jabber server for my own learning, and one day maybe deployment over our VPN.

I'm trying to figure out which server I should use, however they all seem far too similar, can anyone give me a reccomendation or at least outline the pros and cons of one or more servers.

Openfire I use internally for my projects. It does have more features than the other servers I believe.

Openfire is certainly the easiest to use and has a nice admin GUI. ejabberd scales pretty well and is used on some big sites, including the jabber.org server. Tigase is another jabber server that I've never used but seems to be under active development
