laptop display issues on Hardy upgrade

Hey folks, I upgraded to Hardy a week or two ago, and since then, I've been having a number of hardware issues with my LinuxCertified laptop (lc2000 or thereabouts).

The number one issue for me right now regards the brightness of my display: it keeps fluctuating -- growing dimmer then brighter. Controls that formerly worked with Gutsy (there are dedicated buttons on this laptop model) no longer work, and I cannot locate anywhere software control for such a simple thing as monitor brightness.

As I said there are a number of other issues (with power management, synaptics touchpad, and more), but this monitor brightness is a bit maddening.

Please note: it worked fine on Gutsy and the version before that.

Any starters on troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated.

This might be at the root of the problem ...

In System>Preferences>Power Management is "Dim display when idle" checked?

Anyone have any other ideas? I really think it has to do with that sensor, which I would like to disable ...
