    Some NetworkManager Settings are missing

I'm recently having problems with network settings.
The menu at the top right of the screen only shows very basic information and I always have to disable and re-enable the networking to get it back to the way it is supposed to be.
I have this problem on three ubuntu 12.04 machines (one updated and two fresh installs)
The entries missing are amoungs other the ones for VPNs and Wireless networks.

    See attached screenshots.

Un-selecting "Enable Networking" and then selecting it again solves the problem until the next restart / suspend. But in the past and on other machines it always shows the full menu.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
