Follow the instructions in the first post regarding adding a custom modeline. It worked for me. Try using cvs (command line tool) to generate the modeline you require.

And, this is important, when things aren't working, check in the log file and look for errors and warnings. The instructions are in the first post.

If this feels to difficult for you, please vote for my solution on brainstorm so the dev's can make it easier.

This helped me to set my resolution, but I faced another problem.

I have to set my resolution every time when I reboot.

Problem solved by changing display options.

Re: HOWTO: change resolution/refresh rate in Xorg

    Hi

I just did a fresh install of 10.04 on an old-ish laptop that previously had a semi-working ubuntu 9.10 (wireless wasnt working, neither was headphone port amonst some other minor issues)

The default resolution is huge (1600X1200) so i cant see much of the screen when the actual screen itself is 1024X800 I can't seem to be able to change the display to something useful.

    I have no xorg.conf in /etc/X11/

If I use the GUI to change res then it looks like this:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I have scoured google's suggestions, this forums suggestions etc please help!

Re: HOWTO: change resolution/refresh rate in Xorg

Hey I accidentaly changed the x11.config file in etc and now when i start the computer, it recognizes a problem in the graphics. I added a couple lines to the x11 files that were something along the liens "beginsection" blah blah "endsection" The blah blah included a bunch of resolutions that i wanted my computer to display like "1280*1024" Right now when i turn on the computer i get pass the flashing ubuntu white logo but after that i get several graphic options that lead to nothing but a blank screen if I click one of them. I'm running ubuntu 9.04. Thanks

Re: HOWTO: change resolution/refresh rate in Xorg

I simply Copied and pasted this to get a good resolution.
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Configured Monitor"
    HorizSync 30-50
    VertRefresh 50-120

    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

Any ideas how to do this in the startup screen? My computer no longer turns on beyond the boot screen, it just goes blank. I'm guessing theres problems with the reolution file i edited.

Yep I don't have my ubuntu computer with me either. I'm pretty sure there might be a low-graphics mode though, i'll check it out when I get home.
