Hi I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 desktop edition, and while my soundcard is supported I'm not able to adjust the volume. Its either 100% or nothing, and its driving me crazy.

I have absolutely no idea of whats causing this, or what I can do to fix it. I can adjust the volume in applications that supports it, like flash player, but not the system output. If I encounter a program which doesn't have a volume slider I'm forced to listen to it at full volume.

Any suggestions? I'm a linux newbie, so please be kind to be detailed in your descriptions, though I do know how to type in shell commands.
