Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

    I am running Hardy 8.04.

I have tried the install by clicking on the restricted driver method - doesn't work. When it restarts, it goes to a screen saying that my video card/ monitor settings are not detected and asking me to specify my monitor/ video card.
I tried to select NVIDIA but it won't work (, and it will then run Ubuntu in a low resolution mode.) If I select NVIDIA on the select Video Card screen and test it, it will fail.

I tried editing xorg.conf to rename from vesa to nvidia, but it won't work.

I have tried installing the software using ENVY but it won't work. - same problem

Lastly, I have tried installing the driver by downloading from NVIDIA NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.13-pkg1.run following the community documentation.
    -same problem when starting X.

    lspci | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7800 GTX] (rev a1)

    Below is my xorg.conf

I should also say that I have also run
    sudo nvidia-xconfig and restart
    but it won't do anything.

    Whenever I type
    sudo nvidia-settings
, I will have this dialog box
"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

Okay, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 because I thought it would work.

The live CD detects my 1680 x 1050 resolution using the default graphics driver.

    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Generic Keyboard"
    	Driver "kbd"
    	Option "XkbRules"	"xorg"
    	Option "XkbModel"	"pc105"
    	Option "XkbLayout"	"us"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
    	Driver "mouse"
    	Option "CorePointer"
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    #	Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    EndSection

    Section "ServerLayout"
    	Identifier	"Default Layout"
    	Screen "Default Screen"
    EndSection

However, as soon as I uncomment the line
    Driver "nvidia"

the same low resolution, not working problem reappears. (I already manually installed the driver.)
I still want to get the proprietary NVIDIA driver to work!!

    Please help me.

Login to gnome and open Nvidia control Panel by typing:
    Code:
    gksudo nvidia-settings
... and see if you are able to change the resolution there. If you can, click on the button that reads Save to Xorg.conf

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

Thanks for your reply, however, it won't let me, because there is a popup which says,

"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

What method did you use to manually install the driver? If you simply installed it without first doing something to disable the Ubuntu drivers, it will fail on reboot. Try: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=797270

    Or alternatively, use envyng:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk
    Then install using Applications->System Tools->EnvyNG.
Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow".

    thanks.
Actually I followed that article, but nvidia is still not installed properly.

I have also tried using envyng.
    It still doesn't work.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

I think that this is perhaps the easiest solution for you:

    1. Do a clean reinstallation of Ubuntu 8.04. During installation, make sure that you have a *wired* internet connection (ethernet cable).

    2. Apply this to-do list after installation:
    http://ubuntutip.googlepages.com/thefirstthingstodo

    3. After finishing that, apply this how-to:
    http://ubuntutip.googlepages.com/bugsinubuntu
    (number 2 )

That should do the job properly. Easily and with no surprises. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.
Tips, tweaks and how-to's for Ubuntu and Mint:

In for a pleasant surprise? Give Xubuntu a try:

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

I guess I can try installing again following the instruction line by line.
(but before that I might try if the beta driver could solve the problem...)

    Any other idea?

    Thanks.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

I am pretty confident with myself following the previous guides though.. The only reason why I might want to redo the installation is because of a fresh installation of envy.

However, because my internet connection is slow, I would want to reuse any package I might need later from those I downloaded to some temporary cache folder yesterday. Would you know where those files are?

Re: Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX help please!

Yeah, I'm having the same problem too... I got my monitor running in 1440x900 now which my monitors native resolution, but whenever I try to update the xorg confid through nvidia-settings it saves it as me having a default monitor with a 640x480 resolution. Any ideas on how I could fix this?

    Here's a copy of my Xorg-config file
    Code:
    # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
    # nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@vernadsky) Tue Mar 4 20:24:34 UTC 2008

    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
    # values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
    #
    # You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
    # For example:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
