Different programs using different sound card

Apparently different programs like to use different sound cards for audio, either the pci card or the on board card. Here is a list of some programs and what card they use:
    On board
    -vlc
    -rhythm box
    -pidgin
    -post login sound
    PCI
    -firefox
    -hydrogen
-ubuntu sounds (pre-login drums, hardware testing, so far i have found)
Is there a way to make a program use a certain sound card? It is quite annoying when I have to switch what my speakers are hooked up to frequently.
Thank you in advance for help.

Re: Different programs using different sound card

If you disable your onboard sound card in the BIOS you won't have this problem.
