And how long does it take to install something in wine, compared to a normal install on a windows system? Is it difficult? I'm a nub

Check the Wine HQ Database to see what the ratings for each program are.

As for install times, they should be akin to working on an actual Windows install, since Wine Is Not an Emulator (and therefore doesn't suffer from emulator limitations in speed).

Just as a word of warning. Don't expect your MS Office 2008 apps to work under WINE.
