Ummm let me think about going back to windows NOT!

How quick my machine boots now it has Ubuntu, how easy to upgrade and review / select updates, friendly sociable support when things are grey, (Ayuthia my hero) With Ubuntu my machine's not stuffed full of unnecessary drivers and processes I'll never use (or understand). I've experienced enough (but not too old to forget) an all too unfair number of random GP faults and compulsory stops, bluescreens and restarts virii, registry problems, from crappy crappy software / tools in the dark years with '95 and '98, and now to run the latest release of this behemoth I need to throw bigger faster fatter wider with more money to get more problems and drivers and processes I can't understand. If they get back to something like MS DOS6.2 (now that was pretty stable!) I might think about it LoL. As I learn more about Unix it only gets better / easier.

Sorry to go on. Live long, live free, Love Ubuntu and Ubuntu developers.

If i were to choose Window$ over Linux just in case windows is free?, i'd still prefer Linux, why?.. Linux is a one-shot-install (ubuntu that is), No Drivers, No extra CD to keep, and very minimal VIRUS, or NO Virus at all, and the best part.. it's FREE!.

I use "Window$ XP Pirated Edition" so literally it's free as well, i use "Deep Freeze" to handle malwares, viruses, my 3yr old daughter and my 11yr old son, and i am very satisfied with that software.

We only use Windows when some applications don't work on Ubuntu, view websites that do not support UNIX, but other than that, we prefer Linux.

I use Windows inside Linux and I don't really have to choose one over the other.

If I really really had choose one over the other that I can't run Virtualbox, I won't run Windows anymore because I don't work as fast there since it's not tweaked to run my way.

yes, i will choose windows over linux, you may be forgetting that windows isn't static, its also evolving for the better.

True. But as far as I'm concerned, Windows isn't bad. Linux is just better.

linux is both free as in speech and free as in beer.

The "free" windows would be free as in beer, but not as in speech. This is a major issue for a lot of we moralists in the Stallman camp of property rights, and it cannot be resolved without opening the code for Windows, which would mean it would join with, rather than compete with, the other open source OS's.

giving it away for no cost is not the only thing linux offers... you'd still buy a contract from M$ for your support package, which i imagine would cost as much as the OS does now, probably more.

If the final product can run on my 3-year-old box (which will be older when the product is released), perhaps Windows will be worth a second look.

Windows is just my guest OS inside my Virtual Box or xVM due to business/work concern (i'm using company's machine).
If windows will be available for free then surely, it will become a trash..
because no more windows update will be available to fix the bugs, no more service packs. and if ever it will be under GPL licence then i don't think
that a large number of programmer will offer their help to maintain it.
most of the talented and able programmers that can do the job on maintaining windows (if ever under GPL) is using Linux box and FOSS centric.
