Recommended Webcam and General Issues with Webcams/Linux

My girlfriend and I are going to be apart for a couple months and I want to buy a couple webcams. I'm running Gutsy/Hardy and she's running Windows.

I'd like a decent quality camera that is known to work well with Linux in general or Ubuntu specifically. I'd prefer to buy two of the same camera - but if I need to pay a lot for linux support I'll probably get an economic one for her.

In general how well are webcams support on Linux and Ubuntu? Do you tend to need support by the manufacturer or do most of them work well out of the box?
