I wondered if there is any point in blocking outgoing ports for a normal destop user?

I don't think that blocking outgoing ports is going to make you any safer, unless it stops an exploit that depends upon having those ports open to outgoing traffic. Or it could protect other computers on your network in the event that your machine is compromised. But if you do a good job of blocking incoming ports, you don't have to worry very much about exploits reaching your machine in the first place.
