Ubuntu sucks with MKV (I think)

Let's face it, I have tried 8 different players with a particular file, and none of them was successful at rendering the three lines of subtitles in the opening song (Japanese + romanization + translation).

Here's how it should look: Windows Media Player screenshot

As Matroska is an open standard, one would expect a community-driven operating system to handle those file perfectly. However, it turned out not quite like that.

These screenshots show how different players I have tried render the subtitles:

    Kaffeine

    *******

    Dragon Player

    gxine

    MPlayer

    SMPlayer

    Totem Player

    VLC

Well, now I'm quite disappointed with Ubuntu. If there are any suggestions and/or I missed any players which might be able to properly render the subtitles in this file, I would be happy to see them.

If you would like to see the file, you can download it through BitTorrent.

In smplayer, select the option Subtitles->SSA/A.S.S subtitles.

Whoa, that was easy. This option should have been enabled by default.

Is SMPlayer the only with SSA/АSS support?

MPlayer uses its own codecs, right? If it's a codec problem, does it mean that the only programs that are able to support SSA are MPlayer derivatives?

Not that I dislike MPlayer, it just makes my choice between players much narrower.
