[SOLVED] Need Help With Xv Driver

Here's the thing, back when I was on Feisty I used smplayer as my main player and I'm pretty sure it used the xv video driver. Now I'm on Gutsy and again I am using smplayer as my main player but this time I can't use the xv driver. Whenever I use it I can't get any video or sound. I've had to resort to using either the x11, gl, or gl2 drivers which work to varying degrees. Now I'm fairly certain I should be able to use the xv driver because I was able to use it when I was on Feisty and the op in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=xv+driver stated that it's highly unlikely that my card doesn't support it and that I may have to make some changes in order to get it to work. So I'd appreciate any help here.

If it's at all helpful, I can't use the xv driver on mplayer either but that's because I can't pick xv at all. It's just not on the list of selectable drivers. I can also post the specs of my video card if someone can tell me how I can find them.

Did you upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, or perform a fresh install? What graphics device do you have? Also, have you disabled effects in System > Preferences > Appearance > Effects?

I did a fresh install and I've never had my visual effects on. As for what graphics device I have, I typed this lspci -nn | grep VGA into terminal and got this:
    Code:
james@james-desktop:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 [Radeon Xpress 200G Series] [1002:5954]
I've also found that I'm using the fglrx driver. I'm not sure but maybe I should use the radeon driver.

    Also here's my xorg.conf if it'll help
    Code:
    # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)

Did you use the Restricted Drivers Manager to install the drivers? Did Xvideo not work with the open source drivers? Also, have you tried Envy at all? Best to remove the proprietary drivers Ubuntu installed before you install and run Envy.

I've been doing some reading and seen that quite a few people have problems with that integrated card. I also know that ATI have fixed several bugs with their drivers, but you will need to install Hardy Heron to enjoy those benefits.

I actually never tried the open source driver, the first thing I did when I finished installing ubuntu was turn on the restriced driver for my video card, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to use my high screen resolution.

No I haven't tried envy yet but I will now, I just need to find out how to remove the proprietary drivers first. How do I do that? Do I just unenable the driver in the restricted drivers manager or what?

Updating to Hardy is a last resort for me. I tried it when it first came out and had issues with it, that's why I downgraded to Gutsy. I was going to wait awhile for Hardy to become more stable but if I can't get xv to work I really might go back to it.

I'd highly recommend a fresh install of Hardy, then only enable the restricted driver (in System > Administration > Hardware Drivers now) once all the updates are installed. ATI have released new drivers since you last tried Hardy, there were known issues with some NVIDIA and ATI drivers in the beginning.

I'd also recommend you take a look at my how-to and set your system up with it, then go to the troubleshooting section and manually install (easy to do) Adobe Flash v10 beta, as it performs much, much better than v9.

OK I've freshly installed Hardy and I enabled the restricted driver after I updated the system. I also installed smplayer using the .deb provided here: http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/down...php?tr_lang=en

Now my visual effects are turned off and my xv still isn't working. I have xv and alsa selected and hen I try to play something I get an mplayer error saying that "MPlayer has finished unexpectedly. Exit code: 1"

Here's the log that comes with the error:
    Code:

Sorry to hear you're still having problems.

Does Totem crash as well? As it uses Xvideo by default also, as does VLC etc.

Does it crash when SMPlayer's audio output is set to PulseAudio?
