    Wireless Networking Troubleshoot

My personal router, to which I was able to connect, has gone down following a recent storm that has left it without power. I am now attempting (with his permission) to connect to my roommates unsecured router named 'dlink'.

Although I can view the 'dlink' router, along with many others, I get zero signal once connected. My roommate has no trouble connecting to the router using Windows XP on a Gateway laptop.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Gateway Model: MA2A laptop. Included below are the outputs of lspci, lshw -C network, iwconfig, and ifconfig.

I used bcm43xx-fwcutter to cut my firmware for my wireless card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

    Re: Wireless Networking Troubleshoot

Are you using bcm43xx-fwcutter or b43-fwcutter? The Hardy kernel introduces a new driver (b43) that replaces bcm43xx. However, bcm43xx does still work, but it currently blacklisted.

If you used b43 and it is not connecting, you might want to try NDISwrapper. Here is a link that provides some installation instructions and also recommends the driver in step 2a.

    Re: Wireless Networking Troubleshoot

Seems to be doing the trick.

I was hesitant to use the ndiswrapper because I read somewhere (perhaps in reference to an older version) that it did not support the Broadcom 14e4:4318 (rev 02) chipset.

Thankyou for all the help. The link provided was very well written and informative.

    A quick note:

I did not attempt to use the b43-fwcutter. Instead, I went straight for the ndiswrapper.
