how to install openoffice 2.4.1 from tarball

Dear Linux gurus: I have used the search on this forum, I have tried the "how to install anything in linux" and I just can't figure it out. I have the upgrade on my desktop, I have extracted it to my desktop, there is the extracted folder:/home/dana/Desktop/openoffice.org-2.4.1~ooh680m14. In the extracted folder is a folder ooo-build and in that folder is a folder src and in that folder is a bunch more tar.bZ2 files.

How do I install the upgrade? How on earth do you know what you are supposed to do? Why is installation so complex? I love linux, but upgrades that don't go through synaptic or add/remove applications are frustrating. Are there any tutorials that work? Is there a linux command line for dummies book out there?

Thanks in advance for any help.

What exactly did you download? Can you post the link? I could not find that file on the Open Office download page.
