    Are Fluxbox and Compiz friendly?

I'm thinking of downloading Fluxbox but will I still be able to install compiz while using it? All I know of fluxbox is that it's much like gnome only lighter...right?
It's not that hard to train a pengiun to do stunts. Just say, sudo roll-over or sudo play-dead.

no, there both window managers, only 1 wm at a time can be used.

So you mean that whenever I install compiz+emerald gnome becomes obsolete so installing fluxbox won't mean any difference? I'm really just after something/anything to make my slow laptop faster with compiz and all. I'm using Linux Mint btw.

try xfce4, it's faster than gnome, works with compiz.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install xfce4
    logout select xfce4
    what are your specs?
when you say slow, is that the feel of the gui or programs?

gnome uses metacity for the wm, compiz replaces that.

Re: Are Fluxbox and Compiz friendly?

Fluxbox isn't really anything like metacity (GNOME's default window manager). XFCE is much closer to a "light" GNOME. All of the *boxes operate a bit differently, and take a bit of getting used to for most people (though are very light on resources and pretty highly configurable).
I do not use Ubuntu any more, nor have I ever used Gnome. Therefore, I tend to give advice that is distro- and DE-agnostic, which, while perhaps not the easiest way, will allow you to move freely between machines.

More of the programs take a long time to open (even Nautilus sometimes). I use Linux Mint which is a fork of Ubuntu. I have an ASUS laptop 256mb I think.
