Mainactor and Cinelerra question, not comparison

Hi, I'm recently trying to edit some home video on Ubuntu 8.04.

The video was taken by a Sony Hard Drive HandyCam (SONY DCR SR60E), and it is said to be encoded with mpeg2.

I can play the video with mplayer and totem with no problem. Mplayer says the video is encoded with mpeg2 and the audio is AC3.

I first tried to edit the video with mainactor. The problem is that mainactor seems doesn't know how to decode AC3 because there is no sound when the video is played inside mainactor. What can I do to let mainactor notice the sound?

Then I tried cinelerra, which recognizes both video and audio of the same mpg file and the playback is just perfect. But the problem of cinelerra is that it won't let me to input chinese titles. I tried copy/paste chinese texts into the title field and failed. English title is just fine.
There is an option to set encoding for titles inside 'Title' video filter window, but there is no encoding for chinese.
What can I do to make cinelerra accept more encoding like UTF-8 or GBK that supports chinese?
