    Old NEC monitor not working

Hi, I have recently installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my desktop at home. I have an Nvidia graphics card with two screens. One is a philips 19" which works perfectly the other is an old NCD 21" monitor Ubuntu will not let me set the resolution higher than 600X800. The screen works perfectly in Xp and in Freespire. What can I do to override this setting.

I guess I should probably add that I have installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and tried changing the settings that way. When I plug only the Philips screen in I can set the res. to whatever I want. If I boot the computer with that old 21" all it gives me is 600X800 try what I may.

Well, this is a show stopper for me. I can't work with a screen like that. Hopefully somebody can help me out here.
