Dear all

Me & my girlfriend entered the wonderful world of Linux a few days ago when when a savvy friend from the UK installed Ubuntu 8.04 on one of our laptops. It was all very exciting – partitioned the drive, kept Windows XP on the other side, and created shortcuts to My Documents in Windows from the Ubuntu desktop. Sadly, just as we were warming up, we booted into Ubuntu this evening, to find all the shortcuts with X’s over them, and the images, and all the other desktop customizations we’d made, disappeared. Our friend, now geographically far away, said there must be a problem with the installation… we're reluctant to reinstall, with all the tweaks that were needed… we're absolute beginners, so please be gentle: what's the best route to follow now? Thanks!
