Any update on this for 8.10? It would be very useful on my Netbook

OK. First, the application I chose to run, I have a text reader that flashes one word or a short chunk of text at a time, programmable up to a freakin' blur, called "dictator" which also works in Winblows but I ain't going there.
So I run that, and Orca screenreader, AND put a transparent hypnotic spiral image playing in Eye of Gnome at a transparency of 0.2

So I can script it with a command to execute dictator, orca and anim.gif which is just the name of the file.

and transset-df -c 0.2 and it does the target-sign, I click on the hypno wheel and drag it over the running speed-reading program.
For a really cool effect you can edit the output from Orca to play alternating words, alternately in the left and right earphones.

What makes it all sweeter than candy, ALL the programs originally referenced in 2005 in the original post, are available as .deb archives.
Install all of them with apt-get.

    ...using wavplay or similar apps.

There's also an echo effect in wavplay for which I have exactly no other use.

man orca and man wavplay for details.
