    Sound visualisation

Now this is a question of getting some advice as to where to start: I wish to use/devise/write a software system that has the following characteristics

Speech input from a microphone is displayed on the screen in some form (as yet to be decided) such that the image of a spoken word persists as a coloured shape, the form of which is dependent on how it is spoken.

Now that's the simplest way I can put it to start with but perhaps it will be a little clearer if I explain that what I am trying to develop is a speech training tool for the deaf and so its a case of turning sound into an image in real-time.

Looking through all the packages available I can't seem to find one that fits the bill (but there probable is one out there). I don't mind doing a bit of coding to modify an existing package but writing one from scratch is a tall order!

Any advice on suitable starting package(s) would be gratefully received.

This is a good place to search for programs, and maybe asking for help at the dev & programming forum too.
Good site to search for guides & how-tos.
