By "logout menu" do you mean the logout button, selecting Quit from the menu, or the user switch applet?
If I'm not being clear enough or giving you enough information, just ask

When you log back in after it crashes, is there anything helpful at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old?

Way Too Much Ubuntu
What video card and driver? If you're using and ATI card and the proprietary fglrx drivers then you'll not get user switching to work. It's a bug in the drivers, known, just not getting fixed AFAIK.
