Totem and rhythymbox using way too much cpu for mp3

Was just listening to an mp3 and noticed totem was using 50% of available cpu on an other wise idle system. I tried rhythymbox and it was worse using almost all cpu. I then tried vlc and it was 1-2% cpu. Why the big difference?

i cant tell you why, but i can tell you that the first thing i do after an install is to remove totem. it is garbage IMO. amarok, mplayer and vlc handle all my multimedia needs perfectly. and i have ALOT of needs.

Yep, Totem has been removed and so has ryhtymbox. Vlc is very flakey too.
Exiting from vlc doesn't work, it goes into the background and keeps playing. Moving a desktop window causes vlc to skip. I'm surprised that all this stuff works so poorly. I've never used Ubuntu and I guess my expectations were way too high. Maybe it's just version 8.
