    Gnome locking up in Hardy

Just built my son a nice Hardy Machine - AMD Athlon XP 2000 512mb. runs nice and quick, but Ive got a slight problem. if its switched on and left without touching the keyboard or mouse, gnome seems to lock up, cant shutdown or choose any menu entries. Ctrl ALT Backspace kills X but when I relogin to gnome, its still locked up. only option is to reboot the machine. It works fine straight after a reboot. I thought it was the screensaver, so I turned it off, but still getting the lockup. Any ideas oh wise gurus?

Im surprised no-one stepped in with help here..
Im going to try tonight deleting .gnome in /home and see if that helps...
