    Can not start Ubuntu

    On start up I get the following msgs:
    #18.518373 invalid compressed format err-1
    #18.519158 Kernel panic-not syncing VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown block.
    I am not proficient enough to try to troubleshoot the problem. Can someone give me step-by-step instructions as to how to overcome this problem? The problem started after the last update 5/27/08.
