Re: Need help with remote desktop solutions

I'm issuing that command you told me to.

    Code:
    xinit -e ssh -XCT yourusername@your.host gnome-session -- :1
I did some searching for this problem and found alot of refrences to the xorg.conf file and refrences in it to fonts. Neither of my host or client computers have any font refrences in their xorg.conf file.

Also the directory that is refrenced in the error message "/usr/share/fonts/x11/misc" does not exsist on either of the computers either.

I just tried taking off options -C and -K and it still produced the same error.

    Try this
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH

Add those lines listed to the etc/vnc.conf file

Re: Need help with remote desktop solutions

Would that even do anything seeing as I'm not using vnc right now?

I probably will switch over to using VNCOverSSH.

Is there some other similar file for ssh that might need to be altered like this one?

Your original FreeNX setup seems to me the faster amongst the solution, I've tried VNC, and definitely it is much slower than NX. I have also used XDMCP or the X route, and still I found it slow. The NX solution was the best I've had over the internet. For added security, I decided not to do port forwarding as it opens my network to the internet, instead I installed hamachi and I use the private hamachi network I created to connect to the system, worked great for me, SSH on hamachi VPN and NX for fast response time.

BTW, if you are having trouble with FreeNX, you can use NoMachine's NX Server free, I believe this would be more stable, although it will only allow 2 sessions at a time.

Re: Need help with remote desktop solutions

The problem I had with NX was that it was completly unreliable and that I wasn't able to see the current session on the desktop. I know I was logged into the current session, but if a web browser window was open up on the desktop where the nx server was, the nx client couldn't see that web browser window, but if I tried to open up firefox with it open on the nx server, it will give me an error message saying that it is already open.

I've had some good sucess with ssh, and I've only run into a few minor problems with VNC. Sadly though I haven't had the time to work out those VNC problems yet.
