cannot connect to wireless networks

i've read around on multiple posts trying their various solutions, none of which worked for me.
Basically using ndiswrapper i can make my wireless card pick up the wireless networks around me, yet cannot connect to them. Even unsecured ones incur the same result.
Toshiba Satelite A210:

Amd turion 64 2.1 dual
4gb ram
atheros ar242x wireless adaptor
ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit)

im completley out of ideas
