freeze up just before login

Okay heres is the situation, I had to move my desktop to a new desk. I did so. Now just from when I shut it down, moved it and hooked it all back up, it freezes up just before the login screen and just after the Ubuntu load screen (not sure what its really called) finishes; the screen is black and the cursor is "working". It works fine if I go to start up under an alternatate version (8.04.14 or something of that nature) but the graphics look horrible and the wireless doesnt work. I then tried to just reinstall ubuntu from cd and it freezes after I click "intall ubuntu" then says "i/o error:error booting from cd". these are the only details I have about the nature of the issue. Please help. Thanks in advance.

i would go inside of the pc and make sure that none of the cables have been disturbed, make sure everything is plugged in properly.

you'd be surprised how easy that can be to do sometimes
