Design revamp for '$100 laptop' (OLPC)

The wraps have been taken off the new version of the XO laptop designed for schoolchildren in developing countries.
The revamped machine created by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project looks like an e-book and has had its price slashed to $75 per device.

this looks quite impressive, wonder if it will make more of an impact than the first version?

I read yesterday that it is going windows to, there is a link on the bbc site to this. So disappointing. I guess there is a reference to dual boot on the main link, I guess we will have to see what happens.

Thumbs down Re: Design revamp for '$100 laptop' (OLPC)

Unless they get Win for free, I don't see how they can do it.
But even then, I guess you can always throw Win out and put some Linux on there.

On the other hand, MS, apart from Apple and Nintendo, may be the only OS vendor that is able to pull this off - or is there a Linux that can be controlled entirely by touch screen?
This machine is highly innovative - no keyboard, just another touch screen that can load any interface you can think of. MS's work on their Surface project will probably be quite useful for this (although I do think they'd have to give it to OLPC for free - which they may actually do, just to establish a presence).

    Here are some more pictures.

Btw, it really pisses me off that I have to give some stupid Yahoo site JS execution rights just in order to post a link or a smiley.

Windows + The additional needed hardware is available for $10 IIRC.

Tablet PCs have been around for a while. Mine runs Ubuntu with a pen quite satisfactorily.

hi, do you have a link for this?

anyway, having the machine capable of running windows is one thing, but once you add all the other essential stuff for windows, like antivirus, antispyware, applications, etc, i suspect the machine will crawl. maybe though, companies like norton et al, are working on 'lite' versions
