Flickering Lines on side of Video

This isn't a major problem, but it is irritating, and it would be nice to fix it. When I play video files in VLC or Movie Player, the left side of the picture has horizontal lines that sort of jump around. I'm hypothesizing that they're segments of the right-hand side of the line of video (they seem to have something to do with each other, color-wise). When I change VLC's preferences to OpenGL output, the lines go away, but then there are other problems, like slow framerate, and odd things happening elsewhere.

The flickering also occurs when the video is paused. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Flickering Lines on side of Video

Update: the problem is pretty much this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=406500

I don't have a nVidia graphics card (Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller), so the instructions weren't particularly helpful. And I couldn't find anything that said "composite" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I'm also pretty much a complete beginner.

    Thanks again for your help.
