    Angry Monitor Turn Black after Login

    I have ubuntu 8.04. I had the nvidia driver installed and running with no probs. I have anvidia fx 5200. Today i connected the ubuntu machine to my tv to see a movie with my whole family, when i plugged it back into the normal monitor i used later, after the login screen the screen turns black.
    So i entered the code

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
    Now i can acess the pc after login, but when i enable the nvidia driver the screen, reboot and login, the screen turns black again. How can i install the driver with out the screen turning black. I need fast help considering that i have a school movie project iam creating and i cant view it properly.

    hello there,

    that sounds strange, did u configure your xorg.conf properly?
    can you post it here, so that i can have a look, than i am able to help u better, u ll find it under /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    (u could do in terminal: $ gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to read it)
    you have to do this to get your second monitor.
    to see what went wrong, u could also post here your Xserver log file:
    ($ gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log)
    after plug in your tv, when you login, the main-screen is black, right?
    so, before doing the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg",
    you could next time just plug out your tv from computer, than restart the machine and tell if your main-screen comes back again after login?
    also tell us on what machine are you running ubuntu hardy?

    What i meant earlier was i plugged in the tv, everything worked fine. Then i turned of the pc, unplugged the tv and plugged in my monitor. The system it's runnoing on is unfortunately a crappy 800mhz intel pentium 3, 440 mb ram, oh and when it turns black my monitor says out of range... i reinsstalled the nvidia driver but the same thing happens.

    hi,

    what i can see from here is that your xorg.conf is not configured at all for dual monitor.

    so you have two possibilities:
    1) you paste the xorg.conf's i'll attach here and tell me if it works,
    (you will have to change it to your system-configuration, but that is easy and the tv settings there to your norm, mine is PAL... and look into the freqs: mine is 50hz, if you hae NTSC than change this to 60hz.
    if you want to change from monitor to tv, you will have to change the xorg.conf aswell, but i have done this with simlinks to my ~/ directory
    so it takes me one command before resetting xserver (ctrl+alt+backspace)

    2) if this does not work for you. try nvidia-settings.
    ($ sudo nvidia-settings) and follow the "wizard".
    if you do not have it installed, get it from synaptic or do simply:
    $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings.

    this should do it for you, i hope..
